Amazon releases Prime Video app for Mac with downloads, AirPlay, and more

Amazon has released a Prime Video app for Mac that includes downloads, AirPlay, and other features.

As they say, better late than never: Amazon has released a Prime Video app for macOS, which can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store. Offline downloads are supported by Prime Video for Mac, and you can choose your preferred video quality for both regular streaming and downloads. (When streaming, Amazon estimates 5.8GB of data usage per hour at the “best” setting.) The figure for downloads is slightly lower, with Amazon quoting 2.9GB per hour of video downloaded.)

When you first launch Prime Video for Mac, you’ll be asked if you want to receive notifications for content recommendations and other notifications. But after that, it’s pretty much the same as it is on other platforms. The Prime Video app can’t be made full-screen by itself, but this changes once you start watching a movie or TV show. Amazon has built in its own extras like X-Ray with cast and behind-the-scenes info, as well as native macOS features like picture-in-picture and AirPlay.

There’s a dedicated store tab where you can rent or buy content in addition to the regular free-with-Prime-subscription selection. When making charges, Amazon will use the payment information stored in your account. Autoplay and subtitle preferences, parental controls, and the ability to view other devices registered to your Prime account are all available in the app. Any further account management will necessitate using a browser to access Amazon’s website.

Most of the features you’d expect from a Prime Video app are now available on the Mac. That new 16-inch MacBook Pro is a great way to watch movies on the go. The Amazon Prime Video app for Mac runs on macOS Big Sur and later.
